Join Joe Grissom as he tells about his life growing up in what is now William B. Umstead State Park.  Joe's great grandfather ran the Company Mill on Crabtree Creek until it was lost to a flood.

We may also have other special guests who will share their memories of the Park area.

This event is part of the Umstead Coalition's events to celebrate the 80th anniversary of William B. Umstead State Park -- Your Park since 1934!

Meet for the talk at the large picnic shelter accessed from the Harrison Avenue Park parking lot and serves as the Company Mill Trail Head.

After the discussion, Joe will lead an optional walk to the Company Mill site and his nearby home site.  The distance of the walk is approximately 3 miles round trip; moderate difficulty; sturdy shoes recommended.  The discussion will end before 3pm and the optional hike will end by 5pm.

We want to make the talk accessible to all.  There is a short walk from the parking lot to the picnic shelter.  Let us know if you will need assistance - the Park ranger can drive you to the picnic shelter from the parking lot.

The Umstead Coalition will provide snacks, water, and lemonade.  We will also have B-Day cakes to commemorate our Park's 80th Anniversary!  We will have a display of photos of life in the Park area prior to becoming a Park.  You will also be able to buy our Park History Book ($20), 2015 Park calendars ($10), Company Mill Note Cards ($8 for 8; $1 each), or bumper stickers - all to support William B. Umstead State Park.

You do not need to register for this event, but registration does help us with planning.  Please feel free to bring guests and share this event with others.
